現代軍人應具備的特質— 智慧 想像力 主動創造力和清廉
不平凡的一天 不平凡的畢業典禮 不平凡的畢業講詞 影響了多少熱血青年軍官
【編按】民國55年11月30日，前美軍顧問團團長強生少將出席在鳳山陸軍官校舉行的三軍官校及空軍飛行學校聯合畢業典禮中，應邀致詞勉勵應屆畢業生時表示，作為現代軍官特別要具備四點特質—「智慧、想像力、主動創造的力量和清廉」，才能做好工作、解決問題、擷取成功，並且要在爾後的軍官生涯中，繼續珍惜、培養這些特質。時空久遠，當年的青壯軍官多半榮退，部分在職的亦居要職，回憶這篇不平凡的講詞，影響了多少青年軍官，當時蔣夫人囑各級幹部、學生背誦此篇講稿，並作為座右銘。本刊特登載中英文對照演說全文，英文原稿由輔導會高主委提供，中文由第七處宋海笙處長翻譯，供諸位袍澤戰友及青年官兵參考。
Mr. President, Madame Chiang, distinguished guests, cadets, friends and families of the Service Academies and Air Force Flying School. It is both an honor and a pleasure for me to speak to you of the graduating classes today. This date, the 30th of November, is a most important milestone in your personal history; it is a day for which you have worked diligently, and a day on which your country honors you by appointing you as a commissioned officer in the armed forces. You will find that your long years of intensive preparation will be of great benefit to you as you begin these first steps up the ladder of success.
總統先生、蔣夫人、各位貴賓，以及三軍官校與空軍飛行學校的各位同學與親友們：
本人深感榮幸能對今天的畢業班講話，今天十一月卅日這個日子，是各位人生中最重要的里程碑之一，這是一個你們辛勤努力追求的日子，也是你們國家以正式任命各位為軍官來尊崇各位的日子。當你們開始登上這成功階梯之後，你們將發現各位多年的密集準備，會對各位有重大的好處。
Your instructors and leaders have worked hard, too, to bring you to your present stature. It has been their job not only to teach you the facts and figures which are a necessary part of the military preparatory educational program; but also to develop in you the basic characteristics of an officer, and I would like to say a few words about these.
各位的師長們也努力教導，造就成今天的各位。他們的職責不僅在把軍事養成教育所必須的事實與數據教給各位，也要培養各位具備軍官的基本特質。接下來，我就要稍微表示我自己的看法：
First, you have intelligence, or you would not be here today. You have been taught to use intelligence; you have learned to be curious, to seek out reasons, to not blindly accept assumptions but to prove their validity. To do your job properly, you have learned to collect all the facts - favorable and unfavorable - so that you are able to arrive at a logical conclusion and make a sound decision.
首先，各位必定要有智慧，否則今天就不會在這裡。師長們教過各位如何運用智慧，你們也學過要有好奇心，要追問原因，不要盲目接受假設說法，而要驗證它們的有效性。為了要把工作做好，你們也學會要蒐集各種資料－包含有利與不利的資料－以便能獲得合理結論，作成可行決定。
Next, you have imagination, or you would not be here today. It takes imagination on your part to aspire to a military profession and to attain this accomplishment of graduation from one of the Service Academies. Every day in our world of expanding technology, there are numerous occasions to use unlimited imagination. That is how satellites, lasers, high-speed communications, jet-age transportation, and the like were developed. You will be called upon to use your imagination in the search for new and refreshing applications for modern technology in the military field, and to find new and modern solutions to the many facets of your profession.
其次，各位必要有想像力，否則今天就不會在這裡，就因為有想像力，各位才會渴望投入軍旅，今天也才能自軍校畢業。在這個技術日益擴充的世界中，我們有無窮的機會去使用源源不盡的想像力，這就是為什麼人造衛星、雷射、高速通訊、噴射時代的交通工具，以及其他類似的發明會出現。各位未來在軍事上也會被要求運用想像力來尋求現代技術的日新月異用法，以及許多各位工作問題上的最新解決方法。
And then you have initiative, or you would not be here today. Without initiative you could not derive the most benefit from your intelligence and from your imagination. You have been imbued here at the academies with a “can do” spirit and an attitude of getting the job done. History is full of stories of success; success that was born of initiative and based on intelligence and imagination.
接下來，各位也必會有主動創造的力量，否則今天也不會在這裡，沒有這主動創造力，各位就不可能自智慧及想像力中擷取最大利益。各位在軍校中已經養成了「可以達成任務」的精神，以及完成任務的態度。歷史中充滿了成功的故事，那是出自於有主動精神而又以智慧與想像力為基礎的成功。
And as most sacred characteristic of an officer, you have integrity, or you would not be here today. In your training you have learned the important value of absolute integrity. One of our military statesmen emphasized the importance of integrity when he said that ordinary men may be inexact, or even untruthful, and suffer merely the consequence of being despised by their associates, but the inexact or untruthful military man trifles with the lives and the future of his fellow-men and with the honor of his government. Side-by-side with your comrades in arms, you are responsible to uphold, and you will uphold, the dignity and integrity of the Republic of China.
而作為一名軍官，最神聖的特質，就是必須清廉，否則各位今天就不會在這裡。在各位受訓期間，大家已經學得了絕對清廉的重要價值所在，我們的一位軍事政治家曾強調清廉的重要性；他說一般人可能多不夠精確，甚至於不真實，以至於個人遭受同僚鄙視的痛苦，但他們部屬的生命與未來及政府的榮譽，卻也因他們的不精確及不真實而虛耗。各位要與同袍攜手並肩合作，各位有責任，也應負責去維護中華民國的尊嚴與完整。
All of these characteristics of an officer, and many more, you have learned, developed and practiced as a Cadet. Continue to cherish and nurture them throughout your career as an officer. We of the Military Assistance Advisory Group join your fellow countrymen in congratulating you, and in the wish that all good things may come to each of you, and that we may all one day enjoy an enduring peace in a world of free nations.
各位在軍校學生階段已經學得了以上－以及還有許多－軍官所應具備的特質之後，各位在爾後的軍官生涯之中，要繼續珍惜並培養這些特質，美軍顧問團願與貴國全體同胞同心恭喜各位，也祝福大家順心愉快，更願我們得享自由國度的太平日子。(點閱次數：1984)
